Having given up with Radio 3’s proms mania, I tried the television. Worse! Three women presenters, Derham, Toksvig and somebody else trying to outdo each other with superlatives. Sickening! I switched off before the end.
‘Three women presenters’ reminds me of the days when we used to speak of a ‘woman doctor’… The ‘somebody else’ was Danielle de Niese – and, in addition to her global career, she is known for her extensive outreach work – something to be applauded.
That said, I’m not at all sure that the BBC has found the most effective tone or approach for its classical music and Proms output, despite undoubted good intentions.
But we need some hard data to come to an informed view. I’d love someone somewhere to carry out some decent research into demographics over the last 40 years at the Proms, at RFH, at the Wigmore, and for Radio 3 and Classic FM. Perhaps it has been done? Does anyone have any figures, or a link?
Thoroughly enjoyed it on Swedish television. Don’t know what the fuzz above was all about, but I guess one size Doesn’t fit all!
Thank you BBC for a beautiful evening, and thank you, presentators for guiding us theough it.
