Bizarre covers No.2*. Karl Böhm’s beautifully judged DG/Vienna Philharmonic recordings of three wonderful Haydn Symphonies – numbers 89, 91 & 92 (‘Oxford’) – with No.88 as a bonus.

Pinned post

The bizarre is this way, see below…

… this one, which maybe suggests Böhm pushing a boat of Haydn delights out, the photo intended to grace Symphonies 88, 91 & 92, yet this YT.post, despite the cover stating 88, includes instead the amiable No.89.

Here’s No.88…

From vinyl.

*A very occasional series, as and when I see something suitable.

A bizarre cover for Ludwig Hoffmann’s 1962 recording of Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ Piano Concerto.

Not unrelated to the above Haydn (you can’t have too much of a good thing)…

Birthday present to self: the Vienna Philharmonic & Karl Böhm’s wonderful DG recordings of Haydn 88, 89, 90, 91 & 92 (‘Oxford’) – miraculous music – the links between the ‘Paris’ & ‘London’ Symphony sets.

Karl Böhm’s fiery Berlin Philharmonic ‘Eroica’, recorded 1961. When first-released in Japan on LP – MG 2009 – Böhm’s Beethoven Coriolan Overture (December 1958, Jesus-Christus-Kirche) was added to side two if not replicated on any other vinyl (re-)issue that I can trace. It’s included here, too.

Karl Böhm (1894-1981) & the LSO, Volume Three (of three): Mozart Symphonies 28 (August 10, 1977; Salzburg Festival) & 35 ‘Haffner’ and with Henryk Szeryng the spurious Violin Concerto “No.7” K271a (both Aug.5, 1973; Salzburg) – Schubert Symphony Nine [/Eight, ‘Great C-major’] (June 29, 1976; London).

Karl Böhm (1894-1981) & the LSO, Volume Two: Weber Overture to Der Freischütz (December 19, 1978; London) – Beethoven Symphony Seven (August 10, 1977; Salzburg Festival) – Richard Strauss Don Juan (June 29, 1976; London) – Schumann Symphony Four [1851 version] (August 10, 1975; Salzburg).

Karl Böhm (1894-1981) & the LSO: Schubert Symphony No.2 (June 28, 1977; London) – Richard Strauss Tod und Verklärung/Death and Transfiguration (August 10, 1977; Salzburg Festival) – Tchaikovsky Symphony No.5 (June 1980; St John’s Smith Square; for Deutsche Grammophon).

I suppose you might describe the Beethoven cover as eye-catching….
