Morton Gould (1913-96)
The trumpeter is Hunter Eberly.
Regarding Edward’s Nielsen 2 comment (below), here is Morton Gould’s Chicago recording of it, with film of a stylus cutting through the vinyl (happy days):

Thank you, Colin ….. Gould’s lovely ‘Pavanne’ offers balm to the soul in these turbulent times. Once again you have directed our attention to another miniature delight. Bless you!
Morton Gould was also an excellent conductor as witnessed by his Nielsen 2 taken at scintillating, scorching tempi that take the breath away .
He was a simply a wonderful musician sorely missed today.
I agree Edward. It is possible to take Nielsen 2 this fast – I was one of the few reviewers who thought so at the time. My favourable view of Stokowski’s equally rapid version was also unpopular and Nielsen expert Robert Simpson was very displeased with that reading. The music can certainly be performed rapidly provided that speed does not throw away the final march-like passage
Most conductors need to beware as only a crack ensemble such as the CSO gets away with it eyes closed almost. Tremendous virtuosity.
