A particularly funny episode today on Radio 4 Extra, at 8 o’clock, midday and 7 (each available for thirty days).

All the regular cast and characters are in place, including Rambling Syd Rumpo, Gruntfuttock, Brown-Horrocks, Chou En Ginsburg, and Julian & Sandy, courtesy of Hugh Paddick and Kenneth Williams, both pictured left in the above photo, Kenneth Horne (1907-69) in the centre.
A breath of fresh air in these times, contributing affectionately to the gaiety of nations! How on earth did they get away with some of the lines, especially in the first series when the Wolfenden Report was barely a decade old? And they did so many times…many many times. Probably because Kenneth Horne’s very voice was the model of BBC respectability. Not to mention the supporting role of newsreader Douglas Smith. As Horne once said, ‘I never cease in my search against smut. When I see a double entendre, I whip it out!!’
