Oh, that priceless snatch from Fawlty Towers! I hope that the Wombles/Jackanory/Dr Who labels aren’t the only ones to stick to this talented actor and entertainer when the obituaries appear. He had a lot more range than that. I seem to remember a radio drama in which he played an ageing entertainer persuaded to appear on a vapidly futuristic talent show. Radio 4 Extra repeated it a while back. Time for another airing, surely. It was a heartbreaker and Cribbins was masterly.
So sad. Lovely, lovely man. Fabulous actor as Andrew says. ‘Right said Fred’, certainly. Didn’t he also do, ‘There’s was I, diggin’ this ‘ole,
‘Ole in the ground. So big and sorta round it was,
And there I was, diggin’ it deep,
It was smooth at the bottom and the sides were steep,
When along came a bloke in a bowler,
Which he lifted and scratched ‘is ‘ead,
(Few da-di-das here, till I reach the next bit I remember)
‘and ‘e said,
“Don’t dig it there, dig it elsewhere,
You’re digging it round and it ought to be square.
The shape’s all wrong, it’s much too long,
And you can’t put a Heole, where a Heole don’t belong…”‘
Etc.
And was he, or was he not, in that wonderful ‘short’ where the borzoi dog in the open-top sports car is mistaken from the back for a beautiful blonde…?

Very sad that Bernard Cribbins has died. He was a total star. Great clips.
