Wonderful stuff: Kenton at this time was way ahead of many of his contemporaries – his album of Robert Graetingger’s City of Glass is still the only jazz album to be reviewed in the classical columns of Gramophone magazine – the kind of stuff Radio 3 should be playing if they’re after more listeners. Knocks Stockhausen into a cocked helicopter – so tragic that Graetingger was only 33 when he died.
What a lovely antidote to that Boulez Beethoven 4!! Life-affirming, red-blooded, fallible human beings intoxicated with their art so that we’re intoxicated too, glad to be alive!
